Chapter 18

Sophie

The weekend came and went like it always does. Kevin stayed with me until Monday morning, which was a first. I like cuddling with him. So, having him for an extra night was kind of great. He got up before me because I don’t have to be at work until eight and that four-thirty in the morning shit he does is for the birds.

Anyway, I woke up Monday to bagel with cream cheese with scrambled eggs and sausage waiting for me on a plate on the counter. Just thinking about it makes me smile. But it also makes my heart ache because Kevin doesn’t date. He also doesn’t see me as more than a friend. If he did he would have made a move again by now. It’s not like I haven’t put myself out there. I’m always touching him and being as close to him as possible. I swear, my lips tingle waiting for him to take them; but he never does.

I just wish Kevin would look at me the way he looks at other girls. He doesn’t see the wideness of my hips or the fullness of my lips. His eyes never leave my face to find my chest, no matter how low cut my shirt is. And why not? Because we are friends and apparently that’s all we’ll ever be.

On Wednesday, Kevin and the guy he introduced as his half-brother without actually saying his name came knocking around six o’clock. Kevin smiled as I opened the door, hands in the pockets of his jeans, a white T-shirt on. He reminded me of Kevin Bacon in Footloose with his scruffy hair and playful smile. But he wasn’t here to take me out. Nope, he was here to bring me a couch. A brand new, still wrapped in cellophane, grey couch with two throw pillows. I stood there, mouth hanging open like a cod fish in my Radiohead shirt and blue-jean shorts as they maneuvered it into my living room. When they were done the half-brother left without so much as a goodbye.

And Kevin, he disappeared to his truck. When he came back a few minutes later he had a bouquet of yellow tulips in one hand and some sort of pie in the other. He walked into the kitchen, like he owned the place, put the pie in the oven and set the flowers on the counter. I was still standing in the living room, too stunned to move. Kevin put two fingers under my chin, closing my mouth. His lips pressed against my temple for a fraction of a second before he left. There was no hello. No goodbye. He just left and I haven’t heard from him since. Oh, and that pie…it was a quiche.

So, I’ve spent the last two days eating left over quiche trying to figure out what the heck is going on. Because in my heart of hearts I know we’re more than friends. We have to be. Then again, I was warned that he’s a player.
